Transition Team Timeline

At the March 19, 2018, Session meeting Dr. Sid Batts announced his retirement effective November 1, 2018.  Trip Adams (clerk), Nancy Abrams, John Atkinson, Cheryl Crago, Mark Yarbrough, Kate Pierce, Stu Johnston, and Susan DeVaney were asked to be Sid's Transition Team (TT). The Session approved these members.

The TT began its work by interviewing recently retired pastors, transition/PNC leaders from large PC(USA) churches to gather information on best practices, lessons learned etc.  Those congregations included Myers Park (Charlotte), White Memorial (Raleigh), and University Presbyterian (Chapel Hill).

TT met with Salem Presbytery to understand the transition steps required by the Book of Order.

        The TT tasks include:

  •  Ensuring we support the FPC pastors and staff well

  • Additional research on best practices to use during the transition

  • Designing the process that moves us forward

  • Producing a FPC Mission Study

  • Defining the role of an interim pastor, writing a position description, finding candidates and evaluating resumes

  • Interviewing prospective interim pastors - selecting a candidate for Presbytery and Session approval

  • Creating a short-term nominating committee (PNCNC) for Session approval, to select members for the eventual Pastor Nominating Committee

  • Preparing for a celebration of Sid's 18 years of ministry with us.

  • Once candidates for the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) slate are selected, the TT will

  • Arrange a congregational meeting for the election of the Pastor Nominating Committee. The Transition Team reports to the Session. The PNC reports to the congregation.

  • Coordinate preparation of a Ministry Information Form for the new Senior Pastor candidates.

  • Communicate well with our congregation and other FPC Greensboro  resources so members can stay up-to-date with our work. Many details, however, are confidential.
