Meet Dr. Danny Massie, Our Interim Pastor
It is with great pleasure and excitement that the Transition Team announces the selection of Dr. Daniel W. Massie of Charleston, SC as FPC's interim pastor.
Danny Massie is a native of Mississippi and a graduate of Belhaven University. He obtained his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond (now Union Presbyterian Seminary) and pursued additional study in Edinburgh, Scotland. He served churches in Norfolk, VA, Vicksburg, MS, and Kingsport, TN before accepting the senior pastorate at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC - a position he held from 1997 until his retirement in 2015. Since that time he has served as interim pastor at both First Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg, SC and most recently at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant, SC.
Danny is married to Tita Morrison Massie, his wife of 50 years. They have four children and six grandchildren. The couple recently returned from an Alaskan cruise in celebration of their golden anniversary. In Danny’s spare time he enjoys reading, golf, collecting epitaphs, college sports, and travel.
Dr. Massie began his work at First Presbyterian the week after Thanksgiving, and preached his first sermon the following Sunday, December 2, the first Sunday in Advent.
Danny and his wife, Tita joined us in Greensboro for the College of Elders Dinner on October 22 where they met elders currently serving on the Session and rotated elders who had served in the past. The Transition Team considered a number of interim pastor candidates and held Skype and in-person interviews with three candidates. All three would have ably served FPC as our interim, but in the end, we discerned God's work and hand in guiding us to Danny Massie.
